‘Robbed’: Ballon d’Or ‘mockery’ blasted as even Messi gets behind snubbed superstar
Lionel Messi is a Ballon d’Or award for a record-extending seventh time, but many aren’t convinced the Argentine superstar deserved his latest honour.
Messi, 34, was voted the winner of football’s most prestigious individual honour on Tuesday (AEDT) having also claimed the last edition in 2019 before last year’s awards were cancelled due to the pandemic.
He won the Copa del Rey with Barcelona and then captained Argentina to Copa America glory before moving to Paris Saint-Germain in August.

But many felt Polish superstar Robert Lewandowski was the more deserving winner of the award. The Bayern Munich striker won the Bundesliga and was the European top scorer, while also breaking Gerd Muller’s legendary 40-goal German record with 41 goals in 29 games.
The sentiment of support for Lewandowski was strengthened by the fact he was widely considered the likely winner of the award that was scrapped in 2020.
Messi even called for his rival to be awarded the honour for last year, and his classy acceptance speech won many admirers, as others declared the legend a deserving winner and now the undeniable greatest footballer of all-time.
